We have a winner!

Thank you to all my new followers and to everyone who entered the 100th Follower Contest! After drawing a name the old fashioned way (little papers and a hat), I am happy to announce the winner of my first official blog contest:

Corey Schwartz!

Congratulations, Corey! I will be sending your $10 Amazon gift card first thing in the morning.

To all my followers: You are the best! I wish I could give each of you a thank you prize, but hopefully my blog is an award in itself (I know...cheese alert).

Don't be such a grown-up!

After a long and busy day, I was lying on my bed with the lights out, my two girls sprawled across the bed with me, chatting. A moment later we saw the bouncing beam of a flashlight in the hallway. It was my little guy, happily toting around the flashlight that his father had just given to him. "Dad said he didn't need this!" he said as he swung the beam back and forth before our faces.

The light flashing in my eyes was a bit annoying, but it was Daughter #2 who spoke up. "You know, those flashlights are supposed to be used for emergencies and stuff. The batteries aren't gonna last."

I turned to her, aghast! "Are you really being such a boring ol' grown-up?"

"Well," she said, "the light was bugging me so I thought I would give him a logical reason to turn it off."

He did turn it off. Maybe so that he could preserve battery power for those times when he goes exploring the depths of the crawl space under his bed.

There is a lesson in this story for us children's writers. Don't be such a grown-up! We've got to hold on to those little bits of childishness, because they are an essential part of every children's writer's toolbox.

So, go ahead. Play with your emergency flashlight. Although it might be a good idea to have back-up batteries.

P.S. Don't forget to enter my 100th Follower Contest, which ends tonight at 10:00 CST!

On the verge...

...of having 100 followers! So, to say "Thank you!" to all those who find my blog worthy of following, I will be having a contest as soon as that number changes from 99 to 100.

When that number reaches 100, I will put up a CONTEST POST explaining the details. For now, all you have to do is:

1) be a follower
2) watch to see when the CONTEST POST appears
3) comment on that post to let me know that you want to win

That's it! Now we just have to wait for that 100th follower...

Tuesday Tip: Brainstorm while you wait

I know. It's been forever since I've put up a Tuesday Tip!

Tip for today: Brainstorming or list writing--which is just another form of brainstorming--can be a great "waiting" activity. So, keep your journal in your purse or man bag, and the next time you find yourself waiting for your kid's practice to be over, or the nurse to call your name, or the line at the DMV to dwindle down below infinity, take that thing out and get writing. You never know when a little exercise like that will spark your next great idea. It's worked for me!

Misused, abused apostrophes

There seems to be an epidemic of misused apostrophes lately. Blog posts, church bulletins, signs--they're everywhere! So here is a little reminder, all in good fun:

Apostrophes are maddening
and frankly, it’s quite saddening
to see misuse and harsh abuse
before my very eyes!

Punctuation is oppressive—
Did you know “its” is possessive?—
and contractions are distractions
that elicit anguished cries.

This may be quite depressin’
but you just might need this lesson
on when you ought to use (or not)
that little curvy mark.

So in the interest of prevention
(I don’t mean to cause contention)
I now will show what you should know,
not leave you in the dark.

If you want to show possession
it would be an indiscretion
to cause distress for little “s”
with no apostrophe.

But when you’re showing many,
in most cases, don’t use any.
For more than one (butts, days or suns)
just let those fellas be.

I hope you don’t feel queasy,
but contractions can be easy
if you just recall to write them all
apostrophes included.

Don’t fall into deception.
There are very few exceptions.
With Strunk and White, you’ll get it right.
My lesson’s now concluded.

I've been lost in revisions

Yesterday I spent my day off doing what I was supposed to be doing: writing! I spent the entire day (from (8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and part of the evening) working on my novel in verse, SHARRA'S WAR.

My most recent revision of SHARRA'S WAR started out a couple weeks ago, with me going through and tweaking the line breaks to make it easier to read. But as I went through it, I realized that the ending needed work. The solution to Sharra's problem worked out a little too easily. I needed her to struggle just a bit more for what she wanted. Yesterday, I finally got to the point where I think it works.

Poor Sharra. If she were real, should would most certainly hate my guts.
