Thistle

Thistle

Unfriendly tower

of green leaves and prickles,

covered in threatening

sharp, pointy stickles,

daring each passerby:

"Come take a nip!

You'll end up with spiny things

stuck in your lip."

But, up at your top

is a soft, purple bloom,

patiently waiting,

with just enough room

for a bright butterfly

to come rest for a while

in prickly, stickly, thistely style.

  2. Love this one. I can see the thistle dancing in my head and all the little creatures finding their way around it.

  6. Thanks, everyone!

I never liked thistles, or "sticker bushes" as I called them, when I was little, because all they were to me were things that lingered, hidden in the grass, waiting for me to step on them! But they sure are interesting when allowed to grow tall and wild.
